Ubuntu based distribution with the LXDE desktop and everything you need to have a good multimedia experience. Mint LXDE is a full distro with tons of apps! Linux Mint LXDE feels much faster than most XFCE distros. You have the option to use the fast EXT4 file system! If you have a newer computer, take a look at Linux Mint 12 with the Gnome desktop. There are also a sweet Debian based Mint distro with the XFCE desktop (DVD size).

Fast Slackware Linux based distro with the Xfce or LXDE desktops. Vector is done right, with needed video codecs, and a good package manager. Download the Vector Standard edition you can install. Vector has been around for awhile, and this distro is rock solid. Use wicd to make your wired broadband connection start on boot. I am very impressed with the 7.0 release!

Go with the XFCE live CD version, as you can take it for a test drive, then use the live installer. After installition everything worked perfect. It already had drivers installed for my nVidia video, plus flash, codecs, and LibreOffice. You can add more software with gslapt. This simple Xfce distribution has Slackware speed. Perfectly polished is the best way to explain this distro.

Slackware based speedster with the Xfce desktop. Zenwalk uses only one application per task, so it is lean and mean. This is a fast and simple distribution, but easy to add more apps. Great package manager! Adding needed restricted programs is easy. I am surprised at how user friendly Zenwalk is. Every system I install Zenwalk on, it always works! This distro is so fast! Zenwalk just screams on a Pentium-4 class machine!

Is this the fastest RPM based distribution you can get? PCLinuxOS got the lightweight Midori browser to work great. Midori is 4X faster than Firefox! It has the Synaptic package manager and the awesome PCLinuxOS control center. The PCLinuxOS LXDE Edition is a little thin, but it is easy to add more programs. Very solid and stable software repositories. The PCLinuxOS Xfce Edition is pretty cool too.

This is the fastest Ubuntu based linux distribution. WattOS uses the LXDE desktop built on a gutted Ubuntu base. It has Adobe Flash, plus the needed bad and ugly codecs are included. You can take advantage of the huge Ubuntu software repositories and make it what you want. WattOS is designed and built to use very little resources. I just love WattOS, and it would be my first choice for netbooks or older laptops!

SliTaz is the fastest Linux distro of them all when installed to the hard-drive. Use the package manager to add more software, flash, and codecs you need. I have SliTaz running on a 733mhz PIII system with 384mb of memory and 32mb of video. My box feels faster than most newer Celeron systems with Windows 7! The Midori browser is light and fast too. Very exciting distro! Check out the Stable and Cooking packages available.

Using ArchBang is like cheating! Arch Linux has alway been a pain to install and configure. ArchBang is an user friendly live CD with a GUI installer. However it does take a little more work to get it right than many other distros, but it is worth the trouble. It is easy to use Pacman to add LXDE desktop and needed codecs. Over 20,000 packages in the Arch and Community software repositories! ArchBang is one of the fastest distros you can get!
